The world's largest garbage cleanup ship – designed and built in China – arrived in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area on December 9.

"Three Gorges Garbage Cleanup No.5" will scoop up floating garbage in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of the Yangtze River. China Three Gorges Corporation built the ship and will operate it.

The vessel is 80 meters long and 16 meters wide. The highly automated ship can collect floating garbage around the clock.

After the completion of the Three Gorges Dam in 2012, the river flow slowed and garbage from the upper reaches of the Yangtze River began to pile up in front of the dam – branches, plastic bottles, and foam boards – affecting water quality and navigation.

By collecting and salvaging floating objects from the Three Gorges Reservoir, the ship will contribute to water quality and shipping safety.
