Huang Zhengyu, a young piano teacher in Yichang, China’s “Piano City”, intentionally dyed his hair grey to narrow the feeling of an age gap between himself and his elderly students.

Huang has taught more than 200 seniors over the past five years. His students won first, second and third prize in the 2021 Yangtze River Piano Open Competition for the Elderly in Yichang.

A graduate of Wuhan Conservatory of Music, Huang won first prize in the Pearl River Kayserburg International Youth Piano Competition. In September 2017, he was recruited as a piano teacher by Yichang University for the Elderly.

Over the past 5 years, to enhance his teaching, he opted for old songs beloved of older people and simplified the musical scores. Now, all of his elderly students are capable of playing classic Chinese music on the piano.

Huang’s efforts are applauded by his students. He has received positive feedback on his teaching every year for the past five years.

"Teacher Huang is our piano prince!" said one of Huang's elderly students.
