The first large-scale performing arts tourism project out of Hubei Province officially broke ground in Yichang on November 24.
The project, Songcheng Three Gorges Eternal Love, is jointly developed by Yidu Municipal Government, Hubei Communications Investment Group and Songcheng Performing Arts, with a total investment of 2 billion yuan (US$280 million). Yidu is a county-level city in Yichang.
The project aims to put on a large-scale performance in the natural environment of the Three Gorges, using the history of the area as its main source of inspiration. Three Gorges was home to the ancient Ba and Chu Cultures during the Western Zhou (c.1045 BC – 771 BC) and early Western Han (202-BC-9·AD) dynasties.
The project will include a theme park with cultural performances held inside, together with the main venue for the Three Gorges Eternal Love show, tourist transportation and information center, amusement square, local lifestyle streets and a performing arts complex.
Located in a Cultural Tourism Industrial Park, the project’s planned area covers 140 mu (about 9.33 hectares).
When completed on May 1, 2024, as it is now planned, the new venue will form a “tourism belt” on the Yangtze River. Together with other famous structures, such as the Three Gorges Dam and Zhangjiajie, it should help to attract more people to the area.
Songcheng Performing Arts is the top listed company in the performing arts sector in China, and also a top 10 global theme park group. It is involved in running cultural performing arts, theme parks and other fields. Apart from the “Songcheng Three Gorges Eternal Love,” there have been 11 “Eternal Love” scene areas in operation across China.
