Farmers are expected to earn more than 60 million yuan (8.39 million USD) from selling gardenia and related products. Gardenia has been planted in 20 villages across Duzhenwan Town, Yichang.
Duzhenwan Town, known as the "Hometown of China's Gardenias," began to develop this particular industry in 2012. In May and June each year, gardenia flowers are processed into tea and the ripe fruits can be used as a natural colorant and medicine.
Liu Dingchun, a villager in Duzhenwan Town, built a small workshop to dry gardenia fruits and produce spices for hot pot. The spices are popular in the southwest China market, thanks to the high-quality gardenia fruits being produced.
Up until now, four primary processing plants have been established which meet the processing needs of fresh gardenia in the main production villages of Duzhenwan Town.
The gardenia purchase volume has doubled this year alone, reaching more than 1,200 tons, according to Liu Kewang, head of a local gardenia processing plant.
