An ambitious 11 billion yuan (US$1.55 billion) new energy system project will make Banyue Town in Yichang the first carbon neutral town in Hubei by the end of 2025.
The company leading the new project is Dangyang Water Energy Clean Energy.
A separate wind farm project built by China Resources has been operational since June 2021.
The new project by Dangyang Water Energy Clean Energy includes photovoltaic power plants, wind power plants, energy storage stations and a 400MW photovoltaics installation floating on a manmade reservoir. The advantage of floating photovoltaic systems that sit on the surface of the water is that they do not take up valuable land resources.
Banyue Town has a good environment, with 37 percent forest coverage.
As the new project comes on tap, power generation, the power grid, power loading and storage will all be combined in an integrated system.
When the new project is operational in December 2025, clean energy will supply all the town's electricity needs and Banyue Town will lay claim to the title of the first carbon neutral town in Hubei province.
The first phase of the photovoltaics project is expected to generate 631.27 million KWh of electricity each year, equivalent to a year’s worth of non-industrial power demand for about 720,000 Chinese people. The project will eliminate the burning of 250,000 tons of standard coal and reduce CO2 emissions by 500,000 tons every year.
"We have started building the floating photovoltaics support base. It will be the largest floating photovoltaics base in China," said Wang Xiaofeng, general manager of Dangyang Water Energy Clean Energy.
Banyue Town is an example of China's continuing efforts to establish a circular, green, low-carbon economic system. China is committed to achieving peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
