China's push for businesses to upgrade large-scale equipment has led to a surge in new orders for clean energy ships at Zigui Huaxing Shipyard Co., Ltd.

Since August 2024, the company has received 15 orders for new energy ships, doubling the number from the same period last year. The orders include eight ro-ro ships and seven bulk carriers, valued at 400 million yuan (US$55.56 million), intended for service along the Yangtze River.

In Yichang, plans are underway to build more than 60 new energy vessels by 2025 to support green and low-carbon transport development on the Yangtze.

Zigui Huaxing Shipyard is constructing LNG and electricity-powered ships at the Zigui Green Intelligent Ship Industrial Park. Six ships are set to launch this year.

The owners of these ships include major shipping enterprises operating on the Yangtze River, such as Yichang Santong Shipping and Yichang Heji Transportation.

All the vessels measure about 130 meters in length. Each ro-ro ship can carry 60 heavy trucks, while every bulk carrier has a cargo capacity of 10,000 tons, meeting the transportation needs for bulk goods along the Yangtze River.

Yichang, located along 232 kilometers of the Yangtze River, is an ideal site for developing the shipbuilding industry. The city is establishing four shipbuilding bases in Zhijiang, Yidu, Zigui, and Changyang to promote the development of smart, eco-friendly ships.
