“Today we have chicken, potatoes with shredded pork, corn, and cabbage. What do you want?” On November 2, 8th-grade student Zhang Yuting set up the lunch table and brought food for her visually impaired classmate Chen Xinmiao. Zhang did not begin her lunch until Chen made her choice and started eating.
Zhang and Chen are classmates at Yuyang Junior High School, Dangyang City of Yichang City. Zhang, 14, left her family to live at school since she was a child, which has caused her to become more sensitive and introverted. She remembered one day in the first grade of elementary school, Chen took her hand and said, “Do you remember me? We were kindergarten classmates!” The lively and cheerful Chen warmed Zhang. Gradually, Zhang found she couldn’t be without her friend and they became inseparable.
Chen has had an eye disease since childhood which had caused her poor eyesight. In 2018, the disease worsened and after a failed operation, Chen’s eyesight deteriorated further day by day. Zhang would continue to reassure her: "Don't be afraid, I am your eyes."
When they graduated from elementary school, Zhang drew a comic book to record their stories over the years. Zhang read the contents to Chen and said: “Even if we can't be in the same junior high school, I will continue to take care of you in the comic. We will be good friends forever.”
Luckily, Zhang and Chen were admitted to the same school, which let them sit together in class so that Zhang was able to take care of Chen at any time. At this point, Chen's eyes had lost their sense of light, so Zhang would help her review their work after each class.
For nearly 10 years, the classmates around them had changed, but Zhang and Chen were always together.
In life, Chen relies on Zhang, whereas emotionally, Zhang may need Chen more.
Zhang is shy and not great at talking with others, so Chen has always helped her communicate with their classmates. She told her secrets only to Chen. As Zhang wrote in her diary: "Chen lights me like the moon in the night, and I also want to be the star in her eyes all the time and accompany her to see the world."
