China Three Gorges University releases new high-yield variety of sorghum, "Yiyou No.9"
China Three Gorges University in Yichang released a new high-yield species of sorghum, "Yiyou No.9," filling the gap of Yichang local varieties of sorghum used in liquor making.
"Yiyou No.9" is a new high-quality brewing sorghum with a rapid growth rate and improved adaptability.
According to Zhang Dechun, head of the research and development team at China Three Gorges University, the new species produces a yield 20 to 30 percent higher than other varieties and has a liquor production rate that is five to ten percent higher for brewing.
The cost of chemical fertilizers and pesticides used per mu is less than 200 yuan (27.5 USD).
After undergoing 10 years of hybrid breeding and 8 generations of breed selection, Yiyou No.9 has solved the problem of raw material supply for Yichang’s liquor production, according to Liu Xinping, director of the Yichang Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
The ceremony of releasing the new sorghum variety was held in Zhijiang, Yichang on Nov. 6, 2022.
