Zheng Mingjin received a special gift for his 60th birthday after finishing his last blood donation on November 6 – a surprise party thrown by Yichang’s blood station.

Zheng has donated more than 200 times in the past 17 years, totaling 47,800 mls.

Zheng witnessed a serious car accident in 2005 and saw how much the injured needed blood for their treatments.  Inspired by the warm hearts of those that streamed in to help, he started his own voluntary blood donation as well.

Throughout all these years Zheng has always kept a healthy diet and would exercise regularly, making sure he is ready to donate at any time.

According to relevant regulation, people aged from 18 to 55 are qualified to donate blood. Only those who have donated multiple times and meet the requirements of a health check can extend the age limit to 60.

“I’m officially too old to do this again,” Zheng said.

In order to thank Zheng for his selfless deeds over the past 17 years, the blood station in Yichang held a celebration and prepared a special birthday cake for him.

"This birthday gift is so special. I never thought that my last blood donation would become so ceremonial," Zheng said while receiving a bouquet from a nurse.
