A groundbreaking ceremony today marked the start of construction on the Yichang Yangtze River Rail-Cum-Road Bridge, a key component of the Yichang-Fuling high-speed rail project (Yichang section).

This initiative is a critical part of the broader Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway, designed to strengthen connectivity between the Yangtze River Delta, central Yangtze regions, and the Chengdu-Chongqing economic hub.

Spanning 141 kilometers within Yichang, this Yichang-Fuling High-Speed Railway line connects Yichang to Fuling in Chongqing via Changyang and Wufeng. With complex geological conditions and high construction standards, the project carries a total investment of nearly 40 billion yuan (US$ 5.50 billion). Expected to be completed by December 2030, it will reduce travel time between Yichang and Chongqing from 4-5 hours to just around 2 hours.

The Yichang Yangtze River Rail-Cum-Road Bridge features an 800-meter cable-stayed main span, accommodating four rail lines, a six-lane urban road, and provisions for future urban rail transit.

In addition to the Yichang-Fuling high-speed rail project, the city is advancing several other high-speed rail projects.

The Wuhan-Yichang High-Speed Rail is over 90 percent complete, with the main structure expected to finish in March and operations to begin by September. It spans 67 kilometers within Yichang and has an investment of 15.5 billion yuan(US$ 2.13 billion), integrating Yichang into the one-hour high-speed rail circle from Wuhan.

The Yichang-Xingshan High-Speed Rail, an 109-kilometer-long link line between Yichang and Zhengzhou-Wanzhou High-Speed Rail, has a total investment of 17.2 billion yuan(US$ 2.36 billion)  and is expected to connect by 2025, providing a 15-minute link to Xingshan. The urban section is complete, with static acceptance scheduled for April.

The Hanyang-Changde High-Speed Rail has received approval by the National Development and Reform Commission and is set to begin construction. The 234.4-kilometer line involves an investment of approximately 32.47 billion yuan (US$ 4.44 billion), designed for speeds of 350 kilometers per hour.

Moreover, preliminary work for the Shiyan-Yichang High-Speed Rail is underway. This line will connect to the Xi'an-Shiyan high-speed rail in the north and the Yichang-Zhengwan high-speed rail link in the south.
