Elderly residents savor freshly prepared stir-fried bean sprouts, spicy potato slices, and tomato-egg soup at the Xuguang Village canteen in Yichang during lunch.

Xuguang Village, home to over 5,900 residents, includes more than 700 seniors aged 60 and older. For 78-year-old Xu Chengxiu, the community canteen provides an easy dining solution. "Cooking at home involves buying ingredients and cleaning up. Here, everything is hassle-free," Xu said.
The canteen serves 30 to 40 people at a time, offering a hearty meal with two dishes and soup for just 8 yuan (US$1.09) to residents aged 60 and above. It also delivers meals to seniors with mobility challenges.
The Yichang government focuses on elderly care, operating 197 canteens and meal assistance facilities, including 91 in urban areas, serving 3.5 million seniors annually. By year-end, Yichang plans to open 30 more dining facilities, adding over 1,500 new seats.
