A live power grid working robot was put into service for the first time in Yichang on November 4, relieving human operators of dangerous work situations on high-voltage power lines.
The robot, used by Yidu Power Supply Company of the State Grid, has several end tool options to use and can carry out various types of operations on the grid in an otherwise challenging and risky environment. The robot collects data from its multiple sensors and adjusts its position and action accordingly. It is expected that this new technology will guarantee the stable operation of the power grid while providing operators’ safety.
Yidu is a county-level city of Yichang City.
“Using a robot to do live work is safer, more convenient, more adaptable, and more versatile,” said Yu Dong, leader of the company’s live wire working team. “The robot took only 25 minutes to complete these tasks, compared to at least one hour needed with manual work.”
Luo Baoyu, an operator of the company, said: “When carrying out live wire operations in the air, I usually became sweaty after a short while, and can't wipe my hands because I’m wearing insulating gloves. Now I can remotely control the robot from the ground. It is much more comfortable and safe.”
