The Changyang pumped hydroelectric power storage station broke ground on December 5 in Changyang County, Yichang City.
The station is designed to have four single-machine 300,000 kilowatts reversible water pump hydro-generator units. After completion, it is expected to provide 1.34 billion kwh of green electricity every year, saving 454,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.132 million tons each year.
With the joint support of China Three Gorges Corp and the local government, the Changyang pumped hydroelectric power storage station was approved in June 2022. The first unit is expected to begin generating power in the third quarter of 2029.
The station is a key part of China’s national pumped hydroelectric power storage development during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period. It is also a pivotal part of Yichang’s drive to build a national clean energy and strategic emerging industry base.
