Yang Bo is organizing members of the konjac cooperative to collect fresh konjac during the peak season in Changyang, Yichang.
Since 2020, the price of konjac has remained low due to the COVID-19 pandemic and trade challenges. However, the market has seen a supply shortage this year, causing prices to rebound.
"This year, the purchasing price for fresh konjac has reached over 8 yuan (US$1.1) per kilogram, setting a historical high," Yang noted, adding that konjac seeds are even more valuable, selling for twice the price of commercial konjac.
As one of the largest konjac producers in the county, Yang has been planting konjac since 2016. Under his leadership, Maping Village has cultivated 153 hectares of konjac.
Merchants from across the country are also purchasing konjac here. Liu Yong, general manager of Jianshixieli Food Co., Ltd., has already bought 800 tons of fresh konjac in Changyang.
The fresh konjac is processed into dried slices and konjac powder for upstream companies.
Yizhi Konjac, a leading enterprise in the national konjac industry, reported a revenue increase of over 60 percent in konjac food during the first three quarters of this year compared to the same period last year.
With the rising popularity of healthy eating, low-calorie konjac snack foods high in dietary fiber have gained traction among consumers. Major brands are increasingly entering the konjac market, stimulating demand and contributing to this year's price surge.
According to the Changyang agricultural department, the county has 2,933 hectares of konjac, which is expected to generate 400 million yuan for local farmers this year.
