The first Sanxia apple-persimmon tasting and promotion was held in Zigui County, Yichang City from October 27 to 28.
Fifteen Sanxia apple-persimmons were evaluated on their weight, appearance, taste, and soluble solids content. Jiuwanxi Hongzhi Ecological Planting Family Farm took home the gold medal.
This event was held to help boost Sanxia apple-persimmon quality and market influence, with the larger goal of supporting rural revitalization.
The Sanxia apple-persimmon, blending the taste of an apple with the shape of a persimmon, has been cultivated in Zigui County for 10 years.
In 2014, Professor Luo Zhengrong from Huazhong Agricultural University visited Zigui County and identified its ideal climate, soil, and water conditions for cultivating apple-persimmons.
Yan Fujun, a resident of Jiuwantang Village, introduced apple-persimmon seedlings from Huazhong Agricultural University and conducted trial plantings at altitudes of 300, 600, and 1,000 meters.
In 2015, Yan Fujun set up Hongzhi Ecological Planting Family Farm. Under Professor Luo's technical guidance, apple-persimmons were harvested in the autumn of 2018.
After thorough analysis, Professor Luo's team found that apple-persimmons thrive best in the Three Gorges area at altitudes of 600 to 1,000 meters. They named the locally grown fruit the "Sanxia apple-persimmon."
