LED streetlights are installed on the roads.
On Dongyan Road in Wujiagang District, two electricity workers replaced a streetlight in about 15 minutes.
"We replaced sodium lamps with LED lights, which not only reduce energy consumption but are also brighter," said Chen Min, the person in charge of the streetlight project at Yichang Streetlighting Management Service Center.
Energy consumption will be reduced by about 70 percent, and illumination will be doubled, he added.
LED streetlights are more energy-efficient and brighter, and they are also equipped with wireless controllers.
"When there are more cars on the main and secondary roads in the evening, the lighting power is at full capacity. When there are fewer people and cars, we reduce the lighting power to 50 percent of its full capacity, and in the middle of the night to 20 percent," Chen explained.
By the end of November, the city expects to replace 4,712 streetlights on 56 urban roads with new ones.
The project will save more than 4.5 million yuan in electricity costs and reduce carbon emissions by more than 19 million tons each year.
