As autumn arrives in Yichang, the harvest season for agricultural products has begun. The city is expanding its sales market for these products through both online and offline channels.

In Sunzigou Village, 40 mu (2.67 hectares) of Chinese cucumbers are thriving.

"The yield per mu will be more than 2,000 kilograms. According to this year's market condition, the output value per mu is expected to reach 5,000 yuan (US$702)," said Li Mingzhang, the director of the village committee.

Chinese cucumber, scientifically known as trichosanthes kirilowii, is a herb used in both traditional Chinese medicine and cuisine. This crop offers quick and sustainable returns, as it can be harvested in its first year and continues to produce fruit for many years.

The local government is guiding farmers to adjust their crop mix based on market demand, establish processing firms, and create a value chain that includes planting, processing, marketing, and sales.

Sugarcane has also seen a bumper harvest. Mao Qifa, a sugarcane grower in Longquantang Village, planted black-skinned fruit sugarcane this year.

Mao Qifa’s sugarcanes have outgrown the plastic sheets of his greenhouses.

"The yield is high this year, and the total output will reach more than 30,000 kilograms," Mao said. To prevent the damage caused by low temperatures, he has built greenhouses to grow sugarcanes.

This season, he has harvested over 10,000 kilograms of sugarcane. Next year, he plans to switch to yellow-skinned golden sugarcane, which is more popular in the market.

During the Yichang Citrus Festival last week, a livestreaming session attracted more than 27,000 viewers within two hours, resulting in 423 orders totaling 13,800 yuan.

The combination of offline fruit picking tours and online livestreaming sales events has broadened the sales channels of Yichang citrus.

In Qingshuiwan Village of Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County, the picking season of golden pear has arrived. Golden pears are large, sweet and have long shelf-life. The county held a golden pear picking ceremony on October 26, while a livestreaming was held to promote its sales.

In recent years, Yichang has worked hard to develop e-commerce for agricultural products, while holding special promotional activities in the main citrus markets. In addition, Yichang organizes enterprises to participate in various large-scale exhibitions every year. Currently, there are more than 5,500 agriculture-related e-commerce entities in the city.

In the first three quarters of this year, 490 agricultural product processing enterprises reached a combined processing output value of 83.75 billion yuan, the Yichang Municipal Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau said on October 23.
