In the third quarter of this year, 2.49 million tons of cargo were transported by ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) ships, 13.15 percent lower than the previous quarter, the Yichang Port and Navigation Construction and Maintenance Center said, without providing a comparison from the previous year. The number of vehicles transported through ro-ro ships was 9,800, also 13.15 percent lower than Q2.

Ro-ro transport on the Yangtze River, which started in 1998, is currently China's sole inland ro-ro transport route.

Ro-ro transport utilizes roll-on/roll-off ships to transport loaded vehicles and cargo by waterway. This method is more efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective compared to traditional road transportation and shipping.

There are 41 vessels operating on three fixed routes: Yichang-Chongqing, Yichang-Zhong County, and Yichang-WanZhou.

Of these, 22 vessels operate on the Yichang-Chongqing route, 10 vessels on the Yichang-Zhong County route and nine vessels on the Yichang-WanZhou route. Each vessel can load up to 60 vehicles.

In the third quarter of this year, a total of 720 voyages were made on the three routes. Of these, a total of 283 voyages were sent from Yichang to Guojiatuo Terminal in Jiangbei District of Chongqing, 252 voyages to Zhong County Ro-Ro Terminal and 185 voyages to Wanzhou District Ro-Ro Terminal.

A total of 21,121 vehicles got on and off ro-ro ships on the Yichang-Chongqing route, accounting for about 42 percent of the total; 16,264 vehicles or nearly 33 percent on the Yichang-Zhong County route; 12,459 vehicles or 25 percent on the Yichang-Wanzhou route.

The goods transported mainly include general merchandise, building materials, chemicals, agricultural products and foodstuffs.
