The Central South Institute of Metallurgy announced on October 12 the discovery of two significant mineral deposits in Yichang, calling it “the most significant breakthrough in nearly 40 years.”

The institute reported finding a manganese deposit of 10.753 million tons in Changyang County, which is equivalent to more than 50 percent of Hubei Province's previously known reserves. Manganese is an essential mineral used widely in the steel, chemical, and electronics industries.

Additionally, a fluorite deposit in Xingshan County contains 1.112 million tons, equivalent to over 90 percent of the province’s previously known reserves. This discovery also marks the end of the absence of a large fluorite mine in western Hubei.

Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF2) is a scarce resource with significant industrial value. It is used in producing fluorides, glass, and enamels, as well as a metallurgical flux. Fluorite also has applications in decorative carving, jewelry, and optics, including low-dispersion lenses for microscopes and telescopes.
