On September 23, an intelligent mowing service team was hired to clear the weeds on over 600 mu (40 hectares) of land in Yichang’s Zhijiang area. They finished the job in just three hours. Currently, Zhijiang has two teams operating more than 200 intelligent mowers year-round. By hiring this service, farmers not only reduce the usage of herbicides but also save about 5 yuan (US$0.71) per mu on weeding costs.

One hundred and two kilometers of the Yangtze River run through Zhijiang, which has three major rivers, numerous lakes and millions of mu of farmland. Zhijiang has made significant efforts in reducing agricultural nonpoint source pollution and protecting the Yangtze River. In recent years, Zhijiang has promoted green planting and discouraged the use of fertilizers and pesticides.

The intelligent mowers which have autonomous piloting functions and can be remotely controlled have been widely adopted here. They are used not only for farmland weeding but also in urban parks and residential areas. The 200 intelligent mowers are capable of covering 1 million mu of farmland in Zhijiang, preventing nonpoint source pollution and reducing the use of 20 tons of herbicide, saving farmers 4.8 million yuan in herbicide costs and improving the overall water quality and soil conservation.
