Unlike historical heritage villages, traditional villages are recognized for maintaining their historical identity over a long period of time despite changes around them, and remaining places where local people continue to live and work. The building environment and architectural style should remain largely unchanged. These villages should also have retained their unique folk customs.

Take Zhangmu Village as an example. The village contains the Zengjia Dahua House building complex, made of wood and brick, which was built during the Ming (1368–1644) and especially the Qing (1636–1912) dynasties. The 130 rooms of this distinctively Qing Dynasty complex are spread across seven buildings and six patios and take up more than 2,000 square meters. The building has significant research and artistic value.

All the villages on the list are expected to receive local and national investment to preserve their environment and local culture, and allow them to develop in a sustainable way.
