Villagers in Dongshi Town, Zhijiang City, have planted muskmelons on one hectare of land, resulting in an income of 450,000 yuan, which is more than three times the previous amount.
Known as the king of melons, Dongshi melons have a distinctive netting relief-shaped appearance and are known for their soft, sweet, and thirst-quenching taste. These melons are exported to Henan, Anhui, Hunan, Guangdong, and other regions, and are particularly popular among consumers during the summer.
The cooperative in Wuling Village, Dongshi Town, has 16 greenhouses that were constructed using 1.6 million yuan from the migrants' post-settlement project. This year, the greenhouses have introduced new muskmelon varieties, with a single-crop yield of up to 4,000 pounds per mu. As a result, the community members' income has increased, and the village collective has accumulated over 80,000 yuan in additional income.
The melon cultivation area in Dongshi Town continues to expand each year, with constant optimization of the varieties. In 2016, "Dongshi Melon" was recognized as a registered protected agricultural product with a geographical indication. The town also cultivates over 10 famous melon varieties, covering an area of more than 667 hectares, and these melons are marketed centrally at the end of May.
Agricultural experts emphasize that the quality of muskmelons is determined by the controlled rupture and subsequent recovery during the growth process. The key to successful cultivation lies in effectively managing watering time, amount, soil moisture, environmental temperature, and light conditions.
