From January to May 2024, Yichang's 419 key trade enterprises achieved over 3.6 billion yuan (around 506 million US dollars) in retail sales through online platforms, accounting for 12.5% of their total sales—an increase of nearly one percentage point from the previous year. Online sales grew by 20% year-on-year during this period.
Besides the strong online sales performance, Douyin, China's leading video-sharing platform, announced on June 13 that Yichang City ranked among the top 100 cities for highest online transaction volumes.
In recent years livestreaming has emerged as a popular e-commerce model, facilitating direct sales of various local products such as oranges, cured meats, kiwifruits, chestnuts, and potatoes, along with specialty items like tea, wormwood, and scented sachets from Zigui. Farmers utilize their mobile phones to livestream, enabling same-day sales and the ability to ship products directly from the fields.
"Zigui County offers year-round Xiacheng oranges, juicy and sweet. Click link 1 to order now!” exclaimed one streamer, showcasing freshly sorted local summer oranges from Zigui Huawei Electric Logistics Park. Orders are swiftly packaged and shipped nationwide.
In recent years, Yichang City has equipped all its affiliated villages with logistics infrastructure, establishing a solid foundation for e-commerce development.
By the end of 2023, Yichang had 35,000 physical shops with online sales channels, generating over 40,000 jobs. In 2024, the Municipal Commerce Bureau plans to enhance the city's e-commerce sector by establishing 100 new key enterprises and conducting additional exchanges and training programs.
