The Yichang government is preparing for a stretch of rainfall by releasing water from 24 major reservoirs.
The Three Gorges Reservoir has lowered its water level to 147.85 meters by 10 am on Friday, freeing up over 20 billion cubic meters of flood control storage capacity.
The reservoir has a flood control capacity of 22.15 billion cubic meters between its normal water level of 175 meters and the flood control level of 145 meters.
Yichang lies at the junction of the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The river's water level changes significantly between seasons, tending to flood during the summer and autumn months. This has previously caused issues for the surrounding areas that depend on the resource.
This year, it is expected that from June 22 to 27, Yichang will experience extended periods of rainfall and there are predicted thundershowers and severe weather events from June 26 to 27.
