Zhibu street, a bustling textile port in the Ming and Qing dynasties, has been revitalized into a vibrant cultural and economic center.
Located along the Yangtze River, Zhibu street thrived due to its advantageous position. The textile industry, introduced at the end of the Ming Dynasty, transformed the area into a bustling hub of spinning and weaving, thus giving the street its name.
The Xinzheng Street Wharf, among all the ruins of six ancient wharves, is particularly notable for its preservation, being the only fully intact commercial wharf from the Ming and Qing dynasties in Yichang's urban area. It has been designated as a cultural relic protection unit.
From 2018 to 2021, Yichang invested 50 million yuan in the ecological restoration and riverbank improvement of Zhibu street, including repairing wharves and renovating the neighborhood.
The rejuvenated Zhibu street now attracts young entrepreneurs. New businesses, including restaurants, B&Bs, cultural experiences, and museums, have brought a new energy to the historic street.
One entrepreneur, Zeng Yalan, moved her business from Wuhan to Zhibu street, opening Lanran Workshop. Here, tourists can experience traditional blue dyeing techniques.
Nowadays, Lanran Workshop has become a must-visit place for tourists when stopping by Zhibu street. “Business here is better during the festive season, and the workshop can make close to 80,000 yuan a day at most”, said Zeng.
