Tourism in Yichang experienced a boom over the five-day May Day holiday from May 1 to 5.

During this year’s May Day holiday, a total of 226,000 passengers passed through Yichang East Railway Station, an increase of 0.5 percent compared to the same period last year. The last day of the holiday saw the peak of return passengers at 62,000, an increase of 3.3 percent year on year.

Yichang Sanxia International Airport carried 46,700 passengers during the holidays. The highest single-day passenger flow was on the first day, with 10,600 passengers. Cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen were among the most popular tourist destinations, and flights to these cities had an average passenger load factor of over 80 percent.

Prior to the holiday, the city released a consumer guide for the May Day break, which included a list of consumer promotions in major shopping areas and large supermarkets, concerts, museums and online tourist destinations. The city also named several commercial streets and shops as areas with special features.

Twenty tourist attractions and B&Bs launched more than 40 free or half-price promotions during the holiday.

Yichang's popular tourism product -- the Two Dams and One Gorge tour -- attracted 76,600 tourists to the Three Gorges Dam, Gezhouba Dam and Xiling Gorge, up 9 percent from a year ago. The Three Gorges Dam Tourist Area alone received a total of 125,100 tourists.

Meanwhile, the city's major scenic spots have also launched new cultural and tourism products.

For example, the Tribe of the Three Gorges Scenic Area launched a large-scale performance; the Qing River Gallery Scenic Area held a folk music festival; and the Hometown of Qu Yuan Tourist Area led visitors to experience the intangible cultural heritage with Yichang characteristics.

Throughout the May Day holiday, sales of 11 large commercial complexes in Yichang totaled about 138 million yuan (US$19.14 million), up 6.5 percent from the same period in 2023.
