On Tuesday, 10,000 Chinese sturgeons were released into the Yangtze River in Yichang City in hopes of restoring the river’s biodiversity. As of now, a total of more than 200,000 Chinese sturgeons have been released as part of this initiative.

In recent years, Yichang has set the protection and restoration of the Yangtze River’s ecological environment at the top of the city’s agenda.

The chemical industry was once the backbone of Yichang’s economy, however, over 130 chemical enterprises have since been closed or relocated in efforts to protect the river.

Yichang’s thriving shipping industry has made several improvements in recent years that promote an increase in green shipping and the use of new energy.

Changjiang Sanxia 1, the world's largest electric cruise ship, was launched in Yichang in 2022.

In March of last year, China's first green and intelligent ship R&D studio was inaugurated in Yichang and later that year in July, the Yichang Green and Intelligent Shipbuilding Industry Development Alliance was established.

Along with Yichang’s 10-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River basin that began in 2020, groups of volunteers can often be seen year-round on the riverbanks picking up garbage or patrolling for the protection of finless porpoises.

The Yangtze River Protection Volunteer Service Alliance was established in Yichang last April. More than 36,000 volunteers from 140 volunteer service teams have engaged in volunteer service activities aimed at protecting the river.

Playful scenes of the finless porpoises have been witnessed more frequently in Yichang, indicating a strong recovery of water quality and biodiversity in the area. The finless porpoise population increased from 1,012 in 2017 to 1,249 in 2022, coinciding with more frequent sightings of additional endangered species.
