On Tuesday, 10,000 Chinese sturgeons were released into the Yangtze River in Yichang to increase the wild stock of this rare species. The event attracted volunteers from several other cities along the river, including Chongqing, Nanjing, Wuhan, Yueyang, Shiyan and Jingzhou.

With an average length of 7-8 centimeters, the released sturgeons have all been artificially bred.

The Chinese sturgeon is one of the oldest vertebrates on Earth with a history spanning over 140 million years.
