A new variety of Primula, commonly known as primrose, has been discovered in Langping Town, Changyang County, Yichang. This marks the first discovery of a new primrose variety in Yichang in over a century.
In 1879, British plant collector Charles Maries collected primrose seeds in Yichang. These seeds bloomed in the United Kingdom in 1880 and were named "Primula obconica". Then, in 1910, renowned British botanist E.H. Wilson brought back primrose specimens and seeds from the Nanjinguan Grand Canyon near the Sanyou Cave in Yichang, naming this variety "Primula rupestris".
Primroses from China, such as Primula obconica and Primula rupestris, were among the first flowers to be introduced to Western gardens. They served as original breeding materials, resulting in the creation of numerous new and beautiful varieties that are now widely cultivated worldwide.
Yichang, known as the hometown of primrose, leads the country in the annual production of primrose seedlings, with an output of approximately 40 million, accounting for 40% of the total.
