Three Gorges ship locks hit new cargo throughput record

The first quarter of this year saw the cargo throughput of the Three Gorges ship locks surpass 30 million tons, nearing the annual figures from 2004, the first year of the ship locks' operation, according to the China Three Gorges Corporation.
Statistics show that in the first quarter of this year, the Three Gorges ship locks were used 2,159 times, helping 8,080 vessels pass through the gorge, carrying a total of roughly 30.2 million tons of cargo.
The Three Gorges ship locks are the world's largest and most technically complex inland waterway ship locks, serving as a crucial hydraulic navigation facility on the Yangtze River.
In 2011, the annual cargo throughput of the Three Gorges ship locks exceeded the 100-million-ton milestone for the first time.
Since 2014, the ship locks have achieved an annual cargo throughput of over 100 million tons for ten consecutive years.
