Over its seven years of operation, the Three Gorges Navigation Authority has adopted new technologies that work to increase safety and efficiency, including wire/rope inspection robots and multifunctional hydraulic testing platforms.
The equipment downtime rate has dropped to 0.79 percent from its initial 11.37 percent at the beginning of trial operations. In addition, the average ship crossing time has been shortened to about 49 minutes from its prior 75 minutes.
In the first quarter of this year, nearly 9,300 ships passed through the Three Gorges Hub, carrying a total of more than 31 million tonnes of cargo.
In the first quarter of 2024, the Three Gorges ship lift carried about 43,500 passengers, a new record for first quarter passenger flow since opening in 2016, the Three Gorges Navigation Authority announced.
The Three Gorges ship lift began trial operations on September 18, 2016, and has formed a joint navigation pass with the Three Gorges locks. Since then, large ships have been able to "climb the stairs,” and small ships to "take the elevator,” referring to the two ship lifting methods at the Three Gorges hub.
