Nine phosphate ore transportation companies in Yiling District have signed an agreement with a local truck battery manufacturer to use its batteries in their electric trucks.

These companies will begin equipping their EV trucks with 230Ah battery cells developed by Yichang Cornex New Energy Innovation Technology. Powered by this battery, the trucks will have a range of 200 kilometers and net cargo capacity of 20 tonnes, which will reduce costs for truck fleet operators by nearly 30 percent.

Cornex has a lithium-ion battery factory in Yiling, which began production in August 2023 with 22 production lines and is the largest new energy battery project by investments and capacity in Yichang over recent years.

Qiu Yue, general manager of Cornex Commercial Vehicle Division, said: "The 230Ah battery cell is excellent in terms of power, range and climbing performance in extremely cold and hot conditions."

Compared to those run on diesel fuel, new energy heavy trucks have zero emissions as well as lower noise and transport costs.

Currently, about 1,500 phosphate transport vehicles are running on streets in Yiling District, with an annual fuel consumption of 31.5 million liters. If these are converted to EV trucks, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 82,800 tonnes and sulphur dioxide emissions by 107 tonnes per year.As a result, many logistics and transport enterprises in the district are accelerating their transformation, including Yichang Junhua Logistics.

The company has more than 100 vehicles and plans to replace more than 60 conventional fuel trucks with new energy heavy trucks over the next two years.

Huang Dengpeng, the company's general manager, said: "This will save us costs and contribute to the company’s transformation to becoming a new energy transporter."
