The third "Tiangong Painting Exhibition" was held at China's Tiangong space station on Friday. A painting by a nine-year-old Yichang student was the only work selected for the exhibition from Hubei province.

The "Tiangong Painting Exhibition" is an aerospace cultural event named after and held on China's space station.

For this third edition, 53 paintings were selected from more than 20,000 entries from all over China to head into space aboard the Tianzhou-7 cargo spacecraft.

Among them, "Life in Space, a New Home for Humanity in the Future" was the only painting selected from Hubei Province. It was painted by Chen Mingbicheng, a student at Yichang Jindongfang Primary School.

Chen's mother, Mrs Bi, said her son has taken part in science and technology and art activities since childhood, and has always been particularly interested in physics and mathematics.

He also likes to read children's science magazines to learn about astronauts and space science, she said. When the call for entries was announced, Chen quickly signed up and discussed the theme and elements of the painting with his mother.

Chen opted to paint a picture of "life in space", including space buildings, space cars and space plants. With his mother's encouragement, he made more than 20 revisions and spent nearly a month completing the painting.

Mrs Bi said that Chen is taking an increasing interest in space, and she hopes that this curiosity will allow him to one day pursue a career in space science and technology.
