Yichang City has published its plan of building “high-quality farmland” for the next eight years.

High-quality farmland refers to arable lands which are flat, in larger size, have complete facilities and hold fertile soil. These fields can offer high and stable harvest and are the foundation of modern agricultural production and management. China plans to newly build 1.2 billion mu (80 million hectares) and upgrade 280 million mu of high-quality farmland by 2030. At 2030, these lands will be able to stably produce about 90 percent of China’s annual food crop output and bring national food security, pervious official media report said.

The "Yichang City High-standard Farmland Construction Plan (2022-2030)" was issued on October 10.

Yichang City will newly build 405,400 mu and upgrade 244,400 mu of high-quality farmland between 2022 and 2025. By 2025, the city will have 3.72 million mu high-quality farmland.

During the period of 2026-2030, Yichang city will newly build 448,100 mu and upgrade 407,100 mu of high-quality farmland. By 2030, the city will have 4,166,400 mu of high-quality farmland.

The plan also included the construction of high-efficiency water-saving irrigation facilities, which will add 26,800 mu of such farmlands between 2022 and 2030.
