New express way bridge begins pile drilling

Recently, the pile foundation work of the Zhijiang Yangtze River Bridge of Dangzhisong Expressway has started. 

The bridge with an 890-meter main span is a key part of Dangzhisong Expressway, which starts from Dangyang City, runs through Zhijiang City, and reaches Songzi City. It also connects Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway, Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway and Yueyang-Yichang Expressway. The official beginning of the bridge’s pile drilling marks the Dangzhisong Expressway construction has accelerated.

Once finished, the Zhijiang Yangtze River Bridge will become the world’s largest composite girder cable-stayed bridge in terms of main span length.

 

The bridge will also cross Bailizhou river island, whose area of 228 square kilometers makes it the third largest river island along the Yangtze River. The bridge will have ramps connecting the island with the expressway. After the bridge is completed, more than 80,000 residents of Bailizhou Town will no longer need to rely on ferry to cross the river, which has been their only transportation means for thousands of years.
