The New Year's Day holiday boosted Yichang's consumer and tourism markets.

Like other cities around China, Yichang’s commercial complexes will launch a series of New Year's Day and Spring Festival commercial promotions with an array of activities and events on the program.

Helped by its "Shining New Year" activities, Wuyue Plaza chalked up 7.5 million yuan  of sales during the holiday, up 87.5 percent on the same period in Covid-hit 2022.

Wanda Plaza in Wujiagang, Yiling, and Yidu have decided to include food festivals and cultural displays in their Lunar New Year shopping festivals.

On the leisure side, ice and snow sports are emerging as a new consumer trend.

The popularity of snow-and-ice activities at Yichang’s ski resorts in Yichang has led to significant growth in the accommodation and catering industries.

Yichang has five resorts, more than any other Hubei city. Tourists can drive to any one of these ski resorts in under two hours.

On December 30, an event to challenge the Guinness World Record for the most snowmen built in one hour was held at Yunxigu International Ski Resort. More than 1,000 participants competed to build the snowmen, with high-definition cameras recording the process.

"We will send all the information to the Guinness World Record people," said Hu Dengrong, the event director.

On December 30, participants worked together to try to break the Guinness World Record for the most snowmen built in one hour at Yunxigu International Ski Resort.

On the first day of the holiday, the Yunxigu International Ski Resort received nearly 2,000 visitors, including many tourists from other parts of the country.

Their environmental and transport advantages have made Yichang's ski resorts hot destinations for tourists, with travel agencies getting in on the act with a slather of specialty products.

"We’ve had more than 600 tourists from Jingzhou and Jingmen (in Hubei province).  Yichang is close by, it only takes a day to go back and forth," said Liu Dan, a travel agency staffer. “One-day outings are a popular choice.”
