The Yichang government has released a new plan to accelerate the development of the digital economy.

The plan is one of a raft of policies and measures designed to promote the development of the digital economy and the big data industry that have been rolled out as part and parcel of the city’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025).

According to projections, by 2025 revenue from Yichang's digital economy industry will exceed 100 billion yuan (US$14 billion), and Yichang will have become a national computing power “relay station” and a computing hub.

To achieve these goals, Yichang will take actions in five areas. It will build more and better computing centers, boost the value of data, promote innovation, ensure financial and talent support and foster the digital economy ecosystem.

Large-scale data centers in the Dongyuemiao, Tianqiuyu and Jigongling areas – together with smart computing centers and supercomputing centers in Duanjun Electronic Information Industrial Park – will beef up Yichang’s digital infrastructure.

The Dongyuemiao Data Center is a key part of the Three Gorges Big Data Center cluster. In 2024, the city will embark on the Phase 2 of this data center, adding an extra 80,000 racks. As soon as construction work is completed, in December 2024, trial operation will begin.

The Beidou Navigation Satellite System, which Yichang will deploy in urban sector, in transportation, electric power and other fields, will create new data value.

Yichang’s digital engines – the Three Gorges Data Center Concentration Area, the Three Gorges Big Data Industrial Park, Dianjun Electronic Information Industrial Park and Xiling Artificial Intelligence Industrial Park, referred to collectively as "One Area and Three Parks" – will foster growth.

In recent years, Yichang has become home to a number of Chinese companies in the industrial internet, big data and artificial intelligence industries, such as Sugon, SmartCore, SENSORO, Exsun, ZhiWangYiLian and Enflame.

In the first half of this year, companies in key digital industries in Yichang achieved total operating revenue of more than 17 billion yuan, up 12.7 percent year-on-year.
