The Ministry of Natural Resources has just approved land usage planning for the new Yichang-Fuling high-speed railway section, which gives the green light for the most difficult section of a new line linking Shanghai and Chengdu.

The line between Yichang and Fuling of Chongqing Municipality is 490 kilometers long, of which 329 kilometers will be in Hubei province. It is part of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High Speed Railway, which consists of seven sections in total. The Yichang-Fuling section, nearly 95 percent of which is made up of tunnels and bridges, is the last to start construction due to its engineering challenges.  The line will have 11 stations: Changyang East, Wufeng, Houhe, Muli, Hefeng, Enshi South, Lichuan West, Huangshui, Shizhu East, Fengdu and Fuling North.

The Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railway is a vital transport link for the Yangtze River Basin. Stretching over 2,100 kilometers, it passes through six provinces: Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Chongqing and Sichuan. Once completed, it will reduce travel time from Shanghai to Chengdu from 13 to just 6 hours.

Among the seven sections, four are in Hubei: Hefei (Anhui province) – Wuhan section, Wuhan hub line, Wuhan-Jingzhou-Yichang section and Yichang-Fuling section.

Starting construction in September 2021, the Wuhan-Jingzhou-Yichang section was the first to break ground. The Hefei-Wuhan section is expected to start construction at the end of this year.

The Yichang-Fuling high-speed railway is a key project in building an east-west high-speed railway corridor between Hubei province and the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin Cities Economic Circle, which is of great significance in leading the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
