Qunyi Village in Dangyang, one of the largest lettuce-producing areas in Hubei province, is celebrating a harvest of over 333 hectares of lettuce.
This year's production has reached 60,000 tonnes, an increase of 20,000 tonnes on last year.
Villagers here had been growing lettuce for over 20 years.
However, a few years ago, poor quality and low yields were major concerns for farmers.
To address these problems, the local government focused on improving seed quality, collaborating with the Wuhan Academy of Agricultural Sciences to breed new red-leaf lettuce varieties.
After the improvements, the lettuces became more disease-resistant, and the leaves became finer, enhancing their appearance. Thin-skinned, tender, and sweet, Dangyang lettuce has become synonymous with quality.
This year the government invested 2.5 million yuan (US$350,000) to build a greenhouse for seedlings.
“Seedlings produced in the greenhouse are healthier, resulting in higher yields,” said Du Xingguo, the Party secretary of Qunyi Village.
Currently, Qunyi village has 866 hectares planted in red-leaf lettuce, and the average annual income for villagers has reached 120,000 yuan.
