Guangzhou Automobile Group’s (GAC) Yichang plant crossed a significant milestone on December 5th, producing its 100,000th vehicle for the year.
In the welding workshop of GAC’s Yichang Factory, smart cars and robotic arms are busy at work. Roughly 500 cars are assembled each day.
"From January to November of 2023, GAC's plant in Yichang sold nearly 100,000 units, a year-on-year increase of more than 70 percent,” said Liang Weibiao, deputy general manager of GAC MOTOR Co., Ltd. and general manager of the Yichang branch.
Despite industry challenges such as the chip shortage and the downturn of the domestic automobile market, the Yichang plant exhibited resilience. Notably, vehicle production reached a record high of 12,000 in August, with a year-on-year increase of over 120 percent.
The recent success can be attributed, in part, to the popularity of the newly introduced GS3 SUV earlier this year, particularly among a younger demographic. Within the first nine months of its launch, the model’s sales exceeded 55,000 units.
After its export in June, the GS3 SUV swiftly gained international acclaim, commanding an average overseas pricing premium of 20 percent, reaching up to 50 percent in some countries.
Next year, GAC's plant in Yichang is set to expedite technological reforms and transformations on its new energy vehicle production line, positioning the plant as a hub for future innovative new energy vehicles.
