The shipping throughput of the Three Gorges Dam reached 160 million tonnes as of 6 pm on Thursday, surpassing the record reached in previous years.

Ships can travel through the Three Gorges Dam via two five-tier ship locks, which allow for a maximum vessel size of 10,000 tonnes and can be passed through in just 2.5 hours. The dam also has a ship lift, which can raise and lower a 3,000-tonne ship directly to climb and descend the 100-meter water level difference.
Ships pass through one of the two five-tier ship locks of the Three Gorges Dam.

Combining both channels, the throughput of the dam totaled 160 million tonnes. During this period, the five-tier ship locks were used 10,148 times with a throughput of 156 million tonnes and the ship lift was used 4,178 times with a throughput of about 4.38 million tonnes.

The Three Gorges project is a multi-functional water-control system, serving as an important transport and waterway facility in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
