China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) has bred 1.2 million Chinese sturgeons in 2023, a new record since artificial breeding began in 1983.

The breeding began on September 17 this year and ran until the end of October.

The Chinese sturgeon is considered a national treasure, like the giant panda, but its population in the wild is on the edge of extinction. In 2010 it was classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Since 2009, the capture of wild Chinese sturgeon for scientific research purposes has been prohibited in China.

The Yangtze River Biodiversity Research Institute, which is wholly owned by the China Three Gorges Corporation, took up the lead in forming a comprehensive system for artificially breeding the Chinese sturgeon.

While achieving success, the center has continually released Chinese sturgeon into the Yangtze River each year, effectively supplementing the population resources of this endangered species.

As of August this year, the China Three Gorges Corporation has released Chinese sturgeons 68 times, with the total number of fry reaching more than 5.3 million over the entire course of this project.
