The sinuous Xiangxi River in Xingshan County winds its way through a beautiful landscape. But the river water is often dirty, particularly at this time of the year. Luckily, a group of professional “garbage hunters” is on hand to clean rubbish from the river every day.

Xiang Ronghua heads up this cleaning team. Every morning, Xiang and his teammates patrol up and down the river in their boat. They fish out garbage floating on the surface and send it to recycling plants to earn income and keep the river clean.

The Xiangxi River is a branch of the Yangtze River, located upstream of the Three Gorges Dam. With five cargo terminals, it is an important transport waterway in the Xingshan Port Area.

When the water level of the Three Gorges Reservoir reaches 175 meters, a large amount of rubbish accumulates in the Xiangxi River, floating on the surface and severely affecting water quality as well as ship navigation.

To remedy this, Xiang’s team have stepped up their efforts to clear away the garbage. "As of October 30, the whole team has been working non-stop for 18 days,” Xiang said.

Normally, the team has someone on duty every day to clean up trash.

According to Wang Xi, the director of the Xingshan Environmental Monitoring Station, water quality tests are carried out on the Xiangxi River each month. The quality of the river water is now above Grade III, which means it is good enough for drinking after processing.
