On October 31, at the Three Gorges Dam's anchorage for hazardous goods ships, a pollutant-receiving ship named "Yichang Environmental Protection No.1" successfully pumped out and received 1.2 tons of domestic wastewater created by an anchored ship called “Yishi 2078”. This event marked the operational debut of the first pollutant-receiving ship at this particular anchorage.
Pollutant-receiving ships are specifically designed to collect other vessels' domestic garbage, sewage, and oil-bearing waste. However, due to strict fire and explosion prevention requirements, ordinary pollutant-receiving ships have been unable to enter the Three Gorges Dam's anchorage for hazardous goods ships. As a result, pollutants and sewage produced by these ships could not be collected - an issue that has long troubled both shipping companies and regulators.
To resolve this problem, the Three Gorges Maritime Bureau took proactive steps in guiding various parties including environmental protection companies, ship inspection agencies, and shipyards towards creating a solution: they jointly custom-built "Yichang Environmental Protection No.1", a professional pollutant-receiving ship tailored specifically for hazardous goods ships awaiting lockage at The Three Gorges Dam.
The 48.8-meter-long "Yichang Environmental Protection No.1" is capable of receiving up to eight tons of domestic garbage along with 300 tons each of domestic sewage and oil-bearing waste plus an additional 95 tons of waste oil – fully satisfying all pollution disposal needs for dangerous goods ships awaiting passage through the Three Gorges Dam.
