Yichang has decided to restore five landmark historical and cultural buildings.

The British Consulate, the Taikoo Ship Company, the Catholic Church, the Osaka Warehouse and the Post Lane complex in the Erma Road Historical and Cultural Block are scheduled to be restored by March 31 next year, according to project leader Zheng Longgang.

The Erma Road block – bordered by Yunji Road, Jiefang Road, Fusui Road, Fusui Cross Road, Hongxing Road, Yima Road and Yanjiang Avenue – contains all five buildings.

Located at No.42 Hongxing Road, the British Consulate features European style architecture. It dates from 1892, the twilight years of the Qing Dynasty. A manifestation of Yichang's opening to the outside world, the site has considerable historical and architectural value.

Located at No.2 Zili Road, the Catholic Church was built in 1883 and converted to the current structure in 1931. It enjoys cultural relic protection status in Yichang City.

When Yichang became a commercial port in 1876, it saw an influx of foreign companies. In 1918, the Swire company built the Taikoo Ship Company office building at today's No.13 Hongxing Road.

Located at Nos.99, 100 and 101 Yanjiang Avenue, the Post Lane Complex was built in 1912. Post Lane is less than 100 meters in length and less than a meter wide, and owes its name to the post office established here before 1941.

Located at No. 55 Erma Road, the Osaka warehouse was built in 1922.

In recent years, Yichang has explored new methods for protecting its historical and architectural heritage. The restoration project will seek to preserve the authenticity of the five buildings.
