Eleven students from the Yichang Special Education School performed using sign language at the opening ceremony of the 4th Asian Para Games last Sunday.
All of the performers are either hearing or speech impaired. As part of the opening ceremony, the girls joined other performers in a square matrix to perform the national anthem and the Hangzhou Asian Para Games song.
"For this Games, Yichang Special Education School was represented by 24 students, 15 of whom will perform at the closing ceremony on October 28," said their leader and teacher Zhong Yan. Since closed-door rehearsals began on August 21, they have been practicing for more than 10 hours a day to ensure their best performance on stage.
In 2013, Yichang Special Education School joined hands with the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe to set up an affiliated school. Since then, students from the school have had the opportunity to appear on major events and prominent stages home and abroad. Fifteen of these 24 students performed in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics in Beijing as well as the 2022 CCTV Spring Festival Gala.
