Yichang City Development Group is investing 1 billion yuan (US$137 million) into the Yichang Shipbuilding Industrial Zone’s Zhijiang Base project, another fillip for the city’s burgeoning shipbuilding industry.

So far this year, the nine shipbuilding companies in the base have built a total of 123 vessels, an increase of 40 vessels on last year. What’s more, 28 of them are new energy vessels (19 hybrid, nine pure electric).

Xinhui is one of the companies in the base. Bidding farewell to a group of visiting clients, Xinhui chairman Qin Qisheng said: "Our order books are full until next year. We have both domestic and overseas orders."

To date the company has signed 12 contracts for next year, seven of which come from Malaysia and Indonesia. Xinhui has 10 more deals under negotiation.

New energy vessels are more expensive to build than conventional vessels, but their operating costs are much lower than ships powered by fossil fuels and they are much less polluting.

Xinhui is cooperating with universities and research institutions to improve its technological competence, and studying developments in the fields of new energy, composite materials and anticorrosive coating in the hope of finding breakthroughs in environmental protection.
