In a sparkling, modern glasshouse in Qixingtai Town, Zhijiang, 20,000 strawberries are suspended in mid-air in neatly-ordered adjustable planting troughs.

As the person in charge presses buttons on a remote control, the parallel planting troughs slowly form a 10-layer "trapezoid" green shelf.

When strawberries are planted like this in mid-air, pickers do not need to bend down when gathering them. This reduces working hours and labor intensity, and also improves economic efficiency. Visitors attracted by the ecological rural tourism angle love it too.

"This project provides a stable planting and growing environment for strawberries," said Sun Chunhua, project leader of Yichang Shenghong Eco-Agriculture Technology.

The company does not just grow strawberries. It also provides technical advice and training for local farmers.

The shed boasts an array of intelligent technologies, including a constant temperature system, internal and external sunshade, electric skylights, automatic water and fertilizer management, a micro-weather station and lifting and monitoring systems.

In this soil-less planting shed, yields are three times greater than with traditional ground planting.
