The 9th Yichang (Yiling) Citrus Festival kicked off today.
The festival, which has been held for eight years, will run for two days this year as a sub-event of the China Yangtze Three Gorges International Tourism Festival. This event gathers experts, scholars and business leaders from around the country to experience the beauty of Yichang’s citrus harvest and find opportunities for cooperation.

The festival includes the display of cultural and tourism products as well as agricultural products and machinery. In addition to the traditional programs such as touring the orchards and tasting oranges, the Orange Farmers' Fun Games and a Citrus Beer and Music Gala were added this year.

Yiling is a district in Yichang with a long history of citrus cultivation. This area is one of the important native places for citrus in China, as proven by the explorations of Xu Qiang, a professor at Huazhong Agricultural University. According to historical records, citrus from this area was offered as tribute as early as 4,000 years ago.
In recent years, Yiling’s citrus industry has been growing rapidly with the support of the local government. The region has grown to have nearly 160,000 citrus farmers and 318,800 mu (21,253 hectares) citrus planting area. The citrus production is expected to reach 820,500 tons this year, a 15 percent increase from the previous year.

During today's opening ceremony, citrus producers and vendors signed cooperation agreements. Yiling is looking forward to more collaboration in the future.
