China’s inaugural launching of a hydrogen-powered ship, “Three Gorges Hydrogen Ship 1,” took place Wednesday morning along the main channel of the Yangtze River.

The ship was developed by China Yangtze Power, a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation, in cooperation with the 712th Research Institute of China Shipbuilding in Wuhan City, Hubei province.

With a top speed of 28 kilometers per hour and a maximum cruise range of 200 kilometers, the 49.9 meter-long ship will mainly be used for traffic, inspection and emergency work in the Three Gorges reservoir area and between the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam.

This 500 KW class catamaran ship uses lithium iron phosphate batteries as its supplementary power source. Additionally, the ship – which is quieter and uses less energy than many vessels – is equipped with power systems developed by Chinese teams.

Estimations indicate that, in comparison to conventional fuel-powered vessels, the Three Gorges Hydrogen Ship 1 is poised to replace 103.16 tonnes of fuel oil, leading to a reduction of 343.67 tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions annually.

This innovative vessel is set to drive the adoption of hydrogen energy technology for inland waterway transport across China.

The maiden voyage coincided with the 2023 China (Yichang) Green Energy Development Conference, which is held in Yichang from October 10th to 12th.
